Take it from a veteran Navy SEAL and sleep-benefit skeptic. Interesting podcast grounded in connections to personal experience as well as scientific research. I highly recommend taking a listen. (Click Outside Podcast link above.)
One statistic that got my attention: Sleep deprivation vs. Drunkenness - 18 hours awake is equivalent to a .05 alcohol level - Sleeping about 6 hrs/night for 11 days leaves you with the equivalent of a .08 alcohol level
We would NEVER tolerate our doctor or mechanic or child's teacher showing up to work drunk, so why do we glorify this effect when it masquerades as sleepiness? And why do we perpetuate our association between sleepiness and productivity + work ethic?
